Mobility
Mobility is defined by the ability to move a joint freely and easily through its full range of motion.
Stiffness at various joints throughout the body, can lead to altered movement patterns, joint dysfunction, and ultimately injury. Mobility should be addressed first so that reduced range of motion does not change how an exercise is performed and to prevent the reinforcement of poor movement patterns.
Commonly immobile joints include the ankle (in dorsiflexion), the hip, thoracic spine, and shoulders (especially in overhead movements).
Mobility deficits are identified through movement screenings and isolated range of motion assessments. Problematic muscle groups can then be treated with joint mobilizations, soft-tissue mobilization, stretching, and or eccentric lengthening techniques.
